This painting depicts designs associated with the water soakage site at Putulnga west of Lake MacKay. The Yala or Bush Potato Dreaming is associated with this site.
This is an edible tuber which is a much sought-after food as it has a high-water content.
In mythological times a large group of Tingari Men came from Kiwirrkurra to the south, passing through this site on their way to Lake MacKay.
The Tingari are a group of mythical characters of the Dreaming who travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites. The Tingari men were usually followed by Tingari women and accompanied by young novices and their travels and adventures are enshrined in numerous song lines. These mythologies form part of the teachings of the post-initiatory youths today as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs.
